Masterclass Peter van Agtmael: The long view: Sustaining a photographic practice
How to sustain a body of work over years: knowing when to follow instinct and work without an assignment, how to photograph complex subjects with engagement and nuance, and how editing and bookmaking transform accumulated photographs into a coherent project. The class will look at the tension between spontaneity and rigor. When to publish, when to wait, and how to avoid both rushing the work and overthinking it into paralysis.
Peter will be using his own projects and books as case studies, he’ll explore how long-term photographic work evolves, from deciding when and why to photograph, to navigating difficult subjects, to editing and bookmaking. At its center is the tension between instinct and deliberation: knowing when to act, when to step back, and when a project is ready to take its final form.

Peter van Agtmael is an American documentary photographer and member of Magnum Photos whose work critically examines the human, political, and psychological consequences of power, war, and national identity, particularly in the United States.
He is best known for his sustained coverage of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and their reverberations at home, most notably in his books Disco Night Sept. 11 (2014) and Look at the U.S.A. (2024), which blend frontline conflict, political spectacle, and intimate moments to question American mythologies.
Van Agtmael’s photographs are characterized by emotional complexity, irony, and a refusal of simple moral narratives. His work has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, the W. Eugene Smith Grant, an ICP Infinity Award and two World Press Photo awards among other grants and honors, and is widely exhibited and published in leading museums and publications worldwide.

About Kaat Celis
After completing her photography education, she worked as a photo editor at Het Laatste Nieuws and Goedele Magazine, and as Head of Photography at De Morgen.
